OUR LIBRARY

I love a great story and enjoy telling one myself. However, if I am reading alone, educational books are what you will find in my hands ninety-nine percent of the time. I simply LOVE to learn! You would think by now, I would be a genius! Unfortunately, somewhere along the busy road of life while raising all these children and animals, I have lost my memory! Perhaps, I have misplaced it in the basement while looking for that missing piece to the loom? Then again, maybe I lost it when I was searching behind the secretary desk for the missing letter that I finally got around to finishing!

IF ONLY, I had misplaced my memory in the bookshelf, for it is there I frequent most.

My children, on the other hand, love to spend time reading novels and short stories. I never imagined I would have to tell my children to stop reading. You will often hear me say, “put that book down and go do your chores!” I think it is of the utmost importance to develop within a young child’s heart a strong desire to read. By the teenage years, that desire will mature into a passion that will be with the youth for a lifetime. So much can be learned through quality books.

During the winter, we do spend many evenings reading before the warmth of the fire. While the fire paints dancing shadows throughout the room, we find ourselves transported into someone else’s world. Often, a world full of triumphs, trials and a love for God. I want to encourage you to take time to read to your children! It is one of my family’s favorite activities.

I have listed just some of our favorites under the following categories: Spiritual, Family, Farming, Health, and Nutrition. Simply scroll down. I will make additions when the good old Michigan wind is howling and the temperature is below 30!

Just the thought of it makes me shiver! Just so you know, I am NOT compensated for referring you to them. I simply highly recommend them :)

SPIRITUAL

HELP FOR THE FAMILY

The Bible is our most precious book. It is where we begin our relationship with our Father Creator. Within its pages, we learn who He is and who we are. His story of love towards us unfolds as Christ Jesus willing accepts the horrific penalty of our sin. I highly recommend studying this book on a daily basis. We prefer the New American Standard and the New King James.

it_equippedtolovenewNorm WakefieldEquipped to Love, This book really helped us love unconditionally!Nothing glorifies God more than when we love with His kind of love. In a self-centered world such as ours, nothing stands out more than someone who knows how to love from a pure heart. Healthy, God-glorifying, enduring relationships depend upon the flow of God’s love. But that’s not an easy thing to facilitate. Although we know we ought to love, we don’t come by it naturally. Equipped to Love presents practical insights into the dynamic of what hinders                                               one’s freedom to love with God’s kind of love!

TFYMJ.C. RYLE: Thoughts for Young Men, My husband and sons read this together. Great father son time. Based on Titus 2:6, this powerful little book makes a great devotional for teens and young men.

it_anchoredNorm WakefieldAnchored in Christ, the Solid Rock in the Storms of Life,  This book was so helpful to Jeff & I. We bought many so to be able to encourage others.  It will help prepared for a Category 4 or 5 trial? Ask yourself, “Is your theological and spiritual foundation solid enough that when you face daily trials or temptations, your faith keeps you anchored in peace?” Being firmly anchored in biblical truth is vital to your witness for Christ and your ability to glorify God in life. Your heart will be encouraged and challenged as you study God’s Word and apply it to daily events.                                                  The result will be an unshakable faith anchored in Christ.

FAMILY

the Following book were written by great authors of the past. Therefore, the language is a bit different than what your children maybe accustom to. However, their content is of such good quality I think they will still be of interest to your children. Especially, if read as a family. Our children have enjoyed them; especially  the Lamplighter series.

RCSBNLDundasShipwrecked But Not Lost, “Experience the utter fear of abandonment, the tension of frigid desolation, and the resolute determination to survive in Shipwrecked, But Not Lost. This breathtaking episode will keep you on the edge of your seat as you follow the spectacular events of a life-threatening voyage. The crashing of icebergs and the raging tempest will strike terror in the bravest heart. You’ll be mesmerized, captivated, and awestruck as you give attention to the unexpected voyage of our three forsaken companions on their perilous journey.” My children loved this!!

RCDDArcher Wallace: Daring Deeds, “Compelling, true accounts of the dangerous expeditions of courageous men who dared to risk their lives for the sake of murderers, thieves, and even cannibals. Their unrelenting passion moved them onward as they shared the message of hope with ruthless peoples who had never been reached and desperately needed to hear about God’s love and redemption. Indeed, these men are true heroes to emulate.”

RCTBTSShaw: Trapped beneath the surface,  “The disastrous day at the icy lake was just the beginning of their troubles! Jack, Eleanor, and Sylvia each find themselves trapped beneath the surface of difficult circumstances and decisions. Eleanor, who longs to be friends with her sister, finds that they are growing more and more distant. But then a calamitous event stops Sylvia dead in her tracks! The bitter jealousy that has had such a hold on her gives way to humility, forgiveness, and loving sacrifice.”

Sir Malcolm & the missing Prince, “Young Prince Hubert is incorrigible, unmanageable, and tiresomely demanding. What is the good King to do? How will his selfish Prince ever learn to rule the kingdom well? His most trusted friend, Sir Malcolm, has a plan. Prince Hubert is swept away to a land where he is simply known as Hugh, a peasant boy. His silks are replaced with rough work clothes, his castle dwelling with a humble cottage. It is here that Hugh learns valuable life lessons from the widow of the forest.Hugh is a sturdy, likable boy who will undoubtedly take a favorite place in the line of lovable Lamplighter characters.” Yet another book, the children beg to hear more of!

RCSTTUGSCHMID’S TALES:  This a compilation of von Schmid’s short stories, including The Unexpected GuestThe Unexpected Return andThe Silent Girl, beautifully illustrates God’s loving provision and perfect plan. In our darkest hour, we can rest assured that God is an ever-present help in time of need.

Harvey YoderThey Would Not Be Silent.  Short stories of Christians who lived under communism and suffered for their faith. Every day people who have feelings and emotions just like us. However, they share an uncommon commitment; their faith.  Each of their stories are unique, yet this one  mutual thread is evident throughout. They would not be silent concerning  their devotion  to the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Little Girl  is an unique story about  an Asian bachelor who adopts an abandoned baby girl and experiences the joys and challenges of fatherhood. In 1979, China adopted the One Child Policy. Most often little China girls are aborted or abandoned. This tender story shows the importance of the Father – Daughter relationship and the special love that grows between them. It also quietly shows God’s faithful love surrounding them both as they age together.

My husband gave this book to our daughter while on a special lunch date with her.  After returning home they read the book together.  I would encourage fathers to do something similar with their daughters. My daughter loves the story and the beautiful watercolor paintings.  I would also like to add that the author Phil Wong  plans on using the proceeds from the book towards printing a translation in Chinese. He hopes to distribute it there and that it would help change the One Child Policy which favors male babies.

Dear Jeff and Kathy: I thoroughly enjoyed browsing your extensive website. Many of your books caught my eye. My husband, Lee, has severe multiple chemical sensitivity. We are faced with leaving our beloved Knox Church, and Michigan, as Lee can no longer tolerate the cold, mold, pesticides, and fertilizers. I am coming out to your farm on 6/9 and 6/11 for Farm Camp. It will be a blessing and a pleasure to assist you in the chores. Lee and I are seeking God’s plan for us as we contemplate setting up our own Growing By Faith farm in the southwest US. Your experience, shared on your website, is invaluable! God Bless you for following the Creator’s agrarian plan for your life. Nancy
